Did you know that not all HONEY is created equal?
It’s TRUE! So let’s make some informed decisions!
Here at the Health Source we are interested in helping you think through your choices of what you feed your body. From raw fruit and vegetables to the products that accompany them on your plate. One particular food we have found to be an absolute gold mine is raw unprocessed honey! Below is a picture of entrepreneurs Blake and Kathleen Shook, owners of Dessert Creek Honey. Blake learned at an early age how important the real deal is when it comes to honey.
Our honey (Desert Creek Honey) is unfiltered and is not strained in any way. Virtually all honey sold is filtered through a sand filter, which removes ANY particle of pollen or nutrients. This is often done to extend the shelf life. We also do not strain our honey, which means forcing honey through a very fine strainer of any kind. Some companies claim to filter honey through cheese cloth…which is almost impossible to do, and still removes some nutrients. This means our honey still has all of the natural nutrients and pollens still in it.
Our honey is also raw honey. Again, virtually all honey sold is heated to over 150 degrees. This extends the shelf life, and also kills more nutrients. Ours isn’t heated above what it would naturally get to inside a beehive, which means the nutrients are not harmed.
We only bottle and sell Texas honey…that is our specialty. We also produce ALL of our own honey from our own beehives, which makes us incredibly unique. Very few companies left in the USA still both produce, and package their own products.
There are MANY companies locally in Texas that claim to sell, raw, unheated, unfiltered, local honey, produced by their own bees. Unfortunately, the vast majorities of these companies are nothing more than marketing companies, and none of those claims are true. As the Director for the American Beekeeping Federation, the Chair of the Marketing division of the American Beekeeping Federation, and the President of the Texas Beekeeper’s Association, I am heavily involved in trying to promote honesty in the industry, but it is challenging. Honey is a valuable commodity, and marketing companies realize that. They are able to spend tens of thousands of dollars in marketing, to make it appear to the consumer that they are getting a product that is raw, unfiltered and local. I am always happy to show data and information on those companies, good or bad. Owner, Desert Creek Honey
Among the various forms of honey you find, raw honey is by far the healthiest and most nutritious choice. Included within its golden nectar are enzymes, vitamins (B6, thiamin, niacin, riboflavin, pantothenic acid and certain amino acids), minerals (calcium, copper, iron, magnesium, manganese, phosphorus, potassium, sodium and zinc) and water. Did your doctor ever tell you that our body needs some sugar? Good sugar like those found in raw fruits and honey. Honey is an ideal food as it can provide a positive supply of liver glycogen for healthy effects of brain metabolism. It’s the ONLY food that contains “pinocembrin”, an antioxidant associated with improving brain function.
This gold mine food is medicinal, antiseptic, anti-cancer, gentle on blood sugar, anabolic, friendliest to our liver, the most ideal fuel for burning body fat and many many other benefits associated with it. So next time you reach for something to sweeten your tea, bread, baking, favorite recipe – think of raw unprocessed honey! You can have it delivered with your next produce delivery saving your time and gas!
